Besides crossover network cable connection and USB bridge connection, is there any faster way to transfer data between two PCs directly?
The fast way to transfer data between two PCs directly?
jump drive or email it to yourself or disk
The fast way to transfer data between two PCs directly?
Depends what kind of date. If its nothing really secretive, megaupload.com. Other wise you can save everything into a disk and just transfer it.
Reply:UNPLUG THE HARD DRIVE AND PLUG INTO THE OTHER PC
NOTE??
DESTOP ONLY
Reply:If you don't mind getting your hands dirty the fastest way is to remove the hard drive from the "Donor" computer and place it in the "receiving" computer.
it will then appear in your file system and you can do a direct copy.
don't be scared about taking hard drives out.... its pretty risk free as long as you don't drop it.
Reply:connect both pcs together via a router and create a small lan. Then share the files on either pc that you want to transfer. You will transfer files at about 100mbs per second if you have a 100 mb network card. Its quite simple to setup. Both pcs just have to have file and printer sharing installed. then you right click the file and go to sharing. Setup the share. Then access the network on the pc you want the files transfered to and right click it, hit copy, and paste it anywhere u want. vrysxyboy2002 on yahoo messenger if you need help
Reply:My network is configured to have "file sharing" you can set this up in the control panel or in the network settings.
This is the setup guide for XP if you have vista just search for "Network File Sharing Vista"
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/304040/e...
Reply:Portable Harddrive or the other ways stated.
Reply:i dont know.. but in my experience... the fastest way is to use pendrive.. and the pendrive should connect directly at the motheboard USB

WIFI Internet Doesn't Connect After Restart?
I have recently had problems with my WIFI. I have a Belkin 54G router, and a couple of days ago, my mum was using it and she said it cut off and there was the EXCLAMATION mark next to the device in device manager. I uninstalled the driver and re-installed it and reinstalled the whole router settings and it worked.
But ever since this, after re-booting my laptop it doesnt find the network so I have to uninstall the whole wireless again and again and re-do all the settings. HELP !! What can I do?
All advice appreciated
WIFI Internet Doesn't Connect After Restart?
Is your wireless USB? Ive had a wireless usb stick in the past and it did that everytime i booted up my computer so i would have to unplug the usb and stick it back in.
What handles your wireless settings (wep key etc), the wifi drivers or Windows? Tried using the opposite?

Is wireless broadband connection using wi-fi router is better than phone line broadband connection?
Which is the best wi-fi wireless router i can buy ? please suggest me good one?

Phone line broadband connection is more better.
Is wireless broadband connection using wi-fi router is better than phone line broadband connection?
i like the wi-fi router because u can have 100 computers in your house on the internet but just paying on the one broadband connection
Reply:I think the phone line broadband connection is best. Remember, wifi is a radio frequency which works fantastic, until there are obstacles or cloud cover (if you are going to be connecting to an internet service that distributes its signal over Wifi).
Radio communication is unreliable at the best of times, rather go for something solid and reliable.

How do we interconnect three computers to create network ?
I would like to inter connect three computers to create a network and how do we do the settings ?
How do we interconnect three computers to create network ?
Hello, if you are going to be connecting them on a network without internet, it is pretty simple.
First-off, you need a Network Switch. I would go with a 5 or 8 port, just for future expansion. You will also need 3x CAT5 UTP flyleads (ethernet cables), all the above is available at your local computer store. I assume your computers all already have network cards or a built in ethernet port on the motherboard. If not, you will need to have an ethernet card installed in each machine.
Then, once everything is hooked up, power up Windows and go into Network Connections, right-click on the Local Area Connection, go to TCP/IP, click on Properties, and click on Use the following IP address.
At machine 1, use ip 192.168.0.1, at machine 2, 192.168.0.2, and at machine 3 use 192.168.0.3. The subnet mask will default to 255.255.255.0.
Then, set up some folder sharing on each machine and bang, you're done!

Can you use 2 ADSL modems on the same telephone line ?
I have 2 desktops in different parts of the house, each next to a phone socket but too far apart to connect to the same router/modem wirelessly. I have a wireless Siemens Gigabit SE587WLANds router/modem and a Alcatel Speedtouch 330 modem. If I connect one to each pc will both pcs be able to connect to the isp either at the same time or seperately ? The isp is Tiscali (max unlimited).
I also have a Linksys WRT54G wireless router, could this be used to extend (bridge) the range of the Gigabit router so each pc could use the Siemens dsl connection ?
Thanks.
Can you use 2 ADSL modems on the same telephone line ?
nope, buy a wireless router and adapter connect the adapter to the less used computer
Can you use 2 ADSL modems on the same telephone line ?
I don't think this would be possible. Best would be to either run a CAT5 UTP cable to the other machine from the one modem router (no longer than 100m) or set up a repeating network with a Netgear DG834 ADSL modem and a Netgear WG602v4 access point/repeater. Then you would require a wireless network card in the second computer.
Reply:Sorry but no as the ASDL modem logs into your internet connection, in a way, dials it up, so you can onyl have one per phoneline, you can link 2 routers together tho. Hope this Helps =]
Reply:Yes....you can set up a wireless network with the Siemens Gigabit and turn the linksys in to a wireless repeater....
Here is the guide....

I have used linksys naively for a month. Is my personal info visible to the router's owner? Can they see me?
Can my neighboor who owns the router that I have naively been using, see people who log on to their system? What about hackers? What can happen? Or does a wifi hotspot like, Starbucks, present the same risks?
I have used linksys naively for a month. Is my personal info visible to the router's owner? Can they see me?
They can tell that you are hooked up to there wireless connection, yes, But only if there smart. And obviously there not if they dont use a password for there router connection. Dont worry about it. Use it until they set a password :) Its not illegal. And they can only see info on your system if it is "shared" and if they have your username and password for your computer when u first log on.
I have used linksys naively for a month. Is my personal info visible to the router's owner? Can they see me?
Anytime you connect to a router, you have just connected to a NETWORK. If that network owner wants to they can indeed track everything you do. They can even "capture" every packet sent and received just using very simple software. If you do not have a good firewall, yes they can access your computer as well!
All that being said most owners usually don't. However, there are people out there setting up networks to do just that. They setup an open router in an apartment or hotel etc and hope you do decide to use it so they can "steal" your personnal data! (Happens more and more often these days.)
SO, only connect to networks you know (and have permission to connect into) trust no open network. Hot Spots, like at Starbucks, present the same risks but less so than an unknown system. At hot spots, the risks are from someone within the system, tracking the data rather than the operator. SO anytime you are on a HOT SPOT system, you need to be very careful with what you access.
See this for some good guidelines.

and do a quick search for "Hot Spot Safety" for even more tips
As a footnote, connecting to a network, without the owners permission, is illegal and carries some heavy penalties! If you don't believe that, read this

Can i login with a user account on a domain controller?
if not why?
Can i login with a user account on a domain controller?
Generally no, I think the user account has to have a certain set of rights attributed to it. If a user account has those kind of administrative rights, then it becomes a security risk because now you will have two administrative accounts versus one...
Can i login with a user account on a domain controller?
according to the default group policies of domain controller any user account (local or domain) cant log on the DC
it is possible if your changing the group policies

Can the other end of the VPN see what my other computer is doing?
If i have my work laptop VPN'd into the work network, and i have another computer, not on the vpn but connecting through the same home network router, can the server at the other end of the VPN see what my other computer is doing? i did a traceroute on it and it did not appear to hit the work network at all, i just thought maybe since it's using the same WAN IP.
Can the other end of the VPN see what my other computer is doing?
NO.
Can the other end of the VPN see what my other computer is doing?
nope, the vpn is specifically blocking any other traffic from entering the network. VPN is using a specific port that is attached to the IP address that the other computer is not so the VPN doesn't see it.
Reply:The idea of a VPN is to prevent exactly this.

How can I know if my network admin is spying on my computer and opening the files stored in my hard disk?
Is there a software that I can use? Is there a way to see activies that somone else did on my computer? somtime I notice that my files were altered . by the way its my office PC and I have internet and interanet access through local network.
How can I know if my network admin is spying on my computer and opening the files stored in my hard disk?
Being it's at work I doubt it. If files are being altered in a way that effect your work you should back it up on a disk daily. If you find a conflict you can go to HR or your boss
How can I know if my network admin is spying on my computer and opening the files stored in my hard disk?
It's difficult to say since the administrator or other authorized person has a lot of ways to do that. You can check with the administrator to verify
Reply:And if they were, what then would you do with that knowledge? PC is a misnomer at the office...it's not a personal computer.
It is a company provided tool which they can examine as they wish...no different than the fire extinguisher outside your door.
Yes there are products that run in the background that will identify a certain range of activity which you could use to determine if someone else used your computer and you can encrypt your files so that only you could open them. You got anything worth the effort to do that?
Reply:If you right click on my computer and go to manage; you can expand the event viewer and click on security.
This will tell you who has logged on to the PC locally or remotely.
However this won't give you any specific information as to what files were accessed and/or modified.
You'd require 3rd party software to find out more.

Does anyone know where I can find a Foo Fighters layout for gaia?
I've been searching and searching but I can't seem to find one. Well, all I ask for is a layout that has Dave Grohl in it. He's one of my most favorite people, and that's all a ask.

Give me some ideas about novell netware?
What kind of ideas?
We have had it at our University for a long time for file and authentication for a long time... and we are in the process of dropping it for a more reliable Active Directory implementation.
De facto standard Microsoft makes more sense, short of a true Open source direction like opendirectory.
Good luck. Let us know if you have a more specific question.

Some one tell me what is networking i want to know about it?
networking is
a.) connceting a computer to the internet
b.) connecting two or more computers together
Lol
im pretty sure you know what networking is you just dont know it is networking!
Some one tell me what is networking i want to know about it?
Networking is awesome. Networking is connecting two or more computers together to share resources such as documents, printers, etc. as well as to gain internet connectivity.
Connecting one computer to the internet deals with a much broader type of networking - I think what you were referring to just relates to Local Area Network(ing), or LAN as commonly referred to.
Hope this answers your question!

Give your ISP a call. They'll sort it.

Get a message of limited or no connectivity for my wireless connection?
A couple a days ago I was able to connected to my wireless router without any problem but yesterday I got a message saying my wireless connection had "limited or no connectivity". Now, I trade rebooting my router and shutting down my PC to fix the issue but was unsuccessful.
Also, my brother's PC is able to successfully connect wirelessly to my router. So I'm confused as to what the problem is with my PC. Any help would be appreciated.
Get a message of limited or no connectivity for my wireless connection?
Sounds like your computer is struggling to get an address from the DHCP server on your wireless router.
Try manually configuring your IP address, gateway and DNS server settings on your computer.
I also had this trouble a while ago, but on both my wireless adapter and ethernet port on my laptop. I had to reinstall Windows XP as there was some software corruption that was causing the problem. However when I entered the addresses manually, it worked with no problems.
Get a message of limited or no connectivity for my wireless connection?
could possibly be that the pc or laptop you are trying to connect wireless-ly with might be a bit too far away from the router? or the signal might be cut down by thick walls/floors etc.
Also it could be that too many pcs are connecting to your router all at once.
Reply:This is a common problem when running virtual PCs on a host PC.
If you were to run ipconfig /all on the faulty PC, you will probably find that the IP address of the wireless interface is 169.xx.yy.zz.
To connect to a wireless router, your PC IP address must be appropriate, along with its subnet mask.
The best way to resolve how the PC should be set up is to check your brother's settings for his PC.
If he has a static IP address, copy EVERYTHING on the Wireless connection tab - IP, subnet mask, gateway, DNS 1 and DNS 2 - onto your PC wireless adapter EXCEPT for the IP address. Use an IP address where the first three sets of numbers are the same and make the fourth set different to any other value (in the fourth set) on the network; but not 0, 1 or 255.
If he has his IP settings set to "Obtain an IP address"; then you must make sure that all the settings on your Network Connection tab for Wireless connection are the same - i.e. Obtain. Any values already there have to be removed for this situation.
Why are you getting "limited or no connectivity"? Because there is no overlap between the IP address and subnet range of the router/modem and those of your PC, so access cannot occur. For example:
Router 192.168.1.1 subnet 255.255.255.0 can only connect with devices 192.168.1.nn where n = 2 to 254
Router 192.168.0.1 subnet 255.255.0.0 can only connect with devices 192.168.nn.pp which is 254 times as many addresses as the previous case.
The router value is the IP address of the router.
The DNS values could be one which is the same as the gateway, and the other a REAL IP address (usually your provider's value) though depending on the ISP, the DNS values could be dynamically set by the ISP every time you turn the modem on.
So it has to be either totally DHCP or totally manually set. I run all my devices with static addresses; but that is just the easiest way or me.
If you set the crook PC to relevant totally static address, you would then know if the PC is too far away from the modem/router. Unlikely, unless things have recently been moved around.

We have been having problems with broadband?
or at least i think its broadband.
every time my phone rings i lose my internet connection.
only thing i can think of is, we got a new phone a few weeks back. an idect x1i. never had any problems when we had our old phone.
if anyone has any other ideas on why the connection keeps getting lost they will be gratefully received.
We have been having problems with broadband?
the frequency (htz)of your phone is interrupting your wireless router.
We have been having problems with broadband?
It seems that you probably have a dial-up connection. If that is true, you need to upgrade to DSL or Cable Internet.
Reply:If you have broadband, did someone forget to put the filter back in the line when you put the new phone in?
Reply:try using a filter box. is will cost you about 拢5. you should have go it free from your internet service provider
Reply:Net Connection is slowed down due to following reasons-
1. Network congestion on net service provider network.
2. Collection of temporary internet files on windows directory.
3. Viruses %26amp; Malware Attacks.
Try This Things-
1. Disable all scheduled tasks form Windows Registry.
2. Turn off Automatic Updates from Windows task Manager
Go to Run -%26gt; MSConfig-%26gt;services-%26gt;uncheck Automatic Updates
3. Go to Run Type Gpedit.msc -%26gt;Administrative templates-%26gt;Network-%26gt;QospacketScheduler-%26gt;... Bandwidth-%26gt; check it to 0% by default it is 20%
4. Try NetspeedBooster software for increasing net speed.
5. Check Firewall policies.
6. Use good Antivirus like- Norton, update it regularly.
Hope you will try this my friend. Fell free to contact me at rakeshdttt@yahoo.com

How exactly can I make connect between 2 IP static? and what if I have one ip static and the other is dynamic
I have windows xp on my home pc with ip staitc ' and have windows xp on my work pc without ip static
I want to know what can i do on my router and os to make share between my 2 computers with just windows component
How exactly can I make connect between 2 IP static? and what if I have one ip static and the other is dynamic
You can go to dyndns.com and get a free subdomain that will point to your PC at work. It will update it's IP address if it ever changes.
You may have problems setting that up if you do not have access to the router in your office.
How exactly can I make connect between 2 IP static? and what if I have one ip static and the other is dynamic
Use MAC address filtering. Each address is totally unique to a specific computer.

How to set a wireless network between a pc and a pda?
I want to share Internet Connection between my pc and my pda. Can anyone help me?
How to set a wireless network between a pc and a pda?
There are two ways to do this.
One - the easy way - get a wireless router set both units up to use the same internet. The router handles the work.
Two - use Ad-Hoc network where your PC is connected to the internet and your PDA connects to the PC's wireless card. This will require using ICS (Internet connection sharing) within the PC and it will require that your PDA software supports AD-HOC networking (many do not!!!) so check to see if your PDA supports Ad-hoc before you even try this one! If is does, just search on Microsoft for AD-HOC network and it has a step by step guide telling you how to use it.
If it were me, I'd just spend a few dollars and get a router!

What is the normal download speed of 100.0 Mbps internet connection?
Something around 12,800 kbps, if it is 100 mbps. but is ur connection having a speed of 100 Mbps or is ur nework card speed is 100 Mbps ?
To check your internet speed
http://www.abeltronica.com/velocimetro/p...
What is the normal download speed of 100.0 Mbps internet connection?
The speed displayed (100.0Mbps) is not the speed of your Internet....it is actually showing the strenght of the wire...you know what speed have you applied for.......the download speed depends on the speed of the Internet that you have subscribed and on the resources available for the Item that you are downloading...
What is the normal download speed of 100.0 Mbps internet connection?
You're going to have a problem finding any sites that will feed you 100mpbs from their end. I've also got a 100Mbps connection and I've been able to determine I get the full speed by starting and monitoring multiple downloads from the sites on this page
http://www.wiredrive.com/download.php
But you'll need to monitor your total network throughput as well. I use MenuMeters on a Mac. Dunno what you've got on a PC. I test to about 11.7MBps which would be about 93.6mbps which is close enough to satisfy me.
Remember, if you're sharing this connection, like at a college or something, you've got no way of knowing how much of the pipe all the other users are taking. You won't be able to get an actual measurement of the capability of the line, but running a bunch of tests at different times over a period of time will certainly give you a good average of it's realworld capabilities
Reply:First, you're confusing the connection between your computer and the ADSL modem with the connection between the ADSL modem and the ISP. Second, you're confusing KBps with Kbps - KBps is 8* bigger than Kbps.
So, if you have a 1.5 Mbps ADSL connection, you'll get about 180 Kbps maximum, more like 120 Kbps on average.
Reply:the speed displayed does not necessarily mean that will be the speed of your internet connection. your internet connection speed usually depends on your sevice provider. the speed you see only tells you the maximum speed your network card supports.
Reply:Read http://thurmania.com/Internetspeed.html to see what 'speed' is all about and let the Frog graph your speed for you.

Why won't my broadband work?
I've moved house 6 weeks ago.
Orange states that 1 week ago broadband became connected.
The BT phone line works, however I've tried 3 modems and none of them shows an ADSL or DSL light.
I've tried all known BT sockets around the house and 2 different filters with the 3 different modems in every possible combination.
Does anyone know the answer?
Please don't be too tekky with your answers. I understand some things, but not others, so basic answers would be the best.
Thanks~~
Why won't my broadband work?
There's a reason they call it D-S-HELL
Same thing happened to me when I tried DSL years back. I had to keep calling and calling my ISP and they'd say oh it's fine and I'd say oh its not and they'd say call again tomorrow. Eventually, I talked to the one guy that seemed to know something and he said "try restarting your modem now" and it worked. Can't tell you what he did, but I CAN tell you that you should have gone with cable if it was an option.
Best thing to do is to keep calling and keep complaining. Don't pay a dime until they get it working.
Why won't my broadband work?
Did u configure the modem to the correct specification of ur ISP ? Is ur Phone line is having any disturbance ?
In both of these cases u , can call ISP %26amp; ask them to sort it out 4 u ....

Sky Broadband (Sagem router) won't connect?
My telephone line has been transferred to sky today so had to remove my trusty old sagem 800 for a new Sagem router.
Running Vista the PC will not recognise the router, everythings plugged in correctly without doubt, all the correct lights are illuminated on the front. But the PC will just not identify the router, any ideas?
To prove the router is working I connected my 2nd pc (xp) through the 2nd ethernet port and here I am on yahoo answers.

How can i connect 3 PCs in a WAN to the internet?
We have 3 clients with survaillance contol rooms @ their premmises. We would like to link these control rooms to 1 central nerve centre in a different location. This nerve centre should have storage capabilities for survaillance footage and also archiving capabilities for future review purposes. How can one implement this?

How can i connect 3 PCs in a WAN to the internet?
u can connect 3 PCs to a single internet ---
first you need to buy a hub and u can connect 3 or more computers
Reply:buy three routers
Reply:First, buy a workstation pc, or a server, and then buy a wireless router.
there, now go be happy with your pr0n, bitches!
Reply:There are several steps involved here.
1. You need to setup the "server" at the central office. You will need a machine that can separate and store the remote devices information. Your machine will need to have storage drives and operating system big enough to handle the files from the "off site" locations.
2. You will need to setup and use a VPN for the remote units to connect into your central system. (At least that is how I would set up the system.) This includes installing and having a large bandwidth line (at least large enough to handle the demand of the remotes).
3. You will need to install either VPN routers, or use a VPN client on the remote users computers. Once installed and connected they will become a "LAN" (local area network) with the central office machine. These remotes also need enough bandwidth to transfer the data.
4. You need to transfer the captured files from the remote units to the central server.
If you know how to do all that, you are ready to go, if not, you need to hire a network pro that does know! Learning how to do that without guidance of a pro can be done but will take time and lots of it!

Copy link location?
when we browse the internet when click on a link and click copy link location .where does it gets copied to .what if i want to see it or use.how can i see it.
Copy link location?
it gets copied to the clipboard which is a system tool. i don't think you can see it.
Copy link location?
It goes into the *****VOID*****
Kidding. It goes into the clipboard. You can right click inside any textbox, text editor, notepad, wordpad etc. and click paste to paste what you just copied.
It is not saved permanently so if you logoff or shutdown your pc then it does goto the... *****VOID***** :)
Also if you copy anything again, previous entry in the clipboard is deleted - you can copy one item at a time.
You can install clipboard viewer program. Useless nevertheless.
Reply:It gets copied to the clipboard %26amp; u can see it only if u paste it some where ...like note pad or address bar ..
Reply:Ok, you see a link, right click copy link location, then right click somewhere you can type and click paste.
This will paste where the link goes to.

you don't want to go to that page, then copy the url from the address bar, cause that takes like 30 seconds, THAT IS NOT ACCEPTABLE!
so you right click, copy link location, then paste it somewhere.
the main place you would do this is if you were referring someone to a certain site.

I need help sorting out my broadband connection. Can you help?
Sorry to ask this again!
I'm in the UK. My provider states that broadband has been connected. I've got no lights (other than power) on my router (I've tried more than 1 router, more than 1 filter and all BT sockets I can find) and still there are no lights to indicate there is connection to broadband.
Is any of you brain boxes prepared to let me call you for help? I'm more than happy to pay for any help that gets me going.
Thanks

Have you used a Microfilter?
I need help sorting out my broadband connection. Can you help?
the first thing to do is connect your PC directly to the modem and see what happens
Make sure you net card is set up is set to DHCP
If the lights are not flashing there is something wrong with the Modem.
Reply:Have you read the instructions on how to set it up.
You can allways call bt,aol or virgine. They will have a technical department who will read you through the step by step instructions.
Reply:have you tried the reset button at the back of your router
Reply:i have experience the same prob... try to check the line cable that connect between your router and line at home or office.. there is a white box.. small white box.. idont know the color of your box.. its not the router problem.. cable communication at home. but thats my prob.. mybe you facing the same prob.. and mybe not.. try.

Why my camera streams disconnects every few min. but i have fast internet speed it happens every night?
try calling the company or going on their website. it really helps. if its broken they may even send you a new one for free if you have a warranty.
Why my camera streams disconnects every few min. but i have fast internet speed it happens every night?
I presume you are referring to streaming video from the web. In that case you may have to contact your Internet Service Provider and find out whether they throttle the available speed during certain peak hours of the day/night.

I have two separate networks 188.89.0.0/24 and 188.89.1.0/24, they are physically connected?
I have two separate networks 188.89.0.0/24 and 188.89.1.0/24, they are physically connected. What should I configure and where to configure so that host of each network can connect to other host in the network
I have two separate networks 188.89.0.0/24 and 188.89.1.0/24, they are physically connected?
Huh? You do not have two separate networks - but just two different IP addresses. We need more information to help you.
1) What type of network are you trying to create? At home?
2) What are you trying to do?
I have two separate networks 188.89.0.0/24 and 188.89.1.0/24, they are physically connected?
Your IP addresses that you gave indicates that you have two computers connected to the same "network". If they are connected by ethernet cable or wireless router, then yes, they are connected to the same network.
To configure:
All the same applies to LAN as WAN except for differences in permissions.
A Lan, is used for a small LOCAL Area Network. Across a short distance with settings to the same Router.
A Wan is needed for a WIDE Area Network. Across the internet.
When you add the feature to allow users to connect REMOTELY to your Lan, then you can say it becomes a Wan.
You would only need a router or switch when you are connecting MORE THAN two computers at any one location.
1. Connect the incoming ISP signal to the modem.
2. Use a short regular ethernet cable to connect the modem to the first computer1.
3. For Just two computers in one location, you can Use a longer CROSSOVER cable to connect computer1 to computer2.
Look on the back of computer1 to see what kind of ports you have available.
The cable from the modem will probably be an RJ45 connector into the modem, and
the back of computer1 should have a RJ45 port
Now, to connect computer1 to computer2
the back of computer1 will need to have another RJ 45 port (recommended)
OR at least a USB port
The back of computer2 should have a RJ45 port also.
You will use these ports to connect the two computers, and your crossover cable will have to have corresponding connectors.
Look for these at WalMart or Radio Shack.
If computer1 does not have a port
you can install one. The port is from a NIC
Network Interface Card.
Actually, that's what is inside all the ports are connected to cards which are connected to the motherboard.
If you don't have a NIC, get one from Ebay, or other computer equipment resources.
When you install a NIC you'll just
open your computer,
knock out one of the blank slots on the back of the computer.
and plug the NIC into the motherboard
and close the computer
(remember to destatic yourself/ touch metal when touching things inside your computer).
Computer1 will need to be turned on
for computer2 to access the internet.
4. If you have more than two computers in a location, you will need a router to connect 3 or more.
The regular ethernet cable will run from the modem to the ROUTER first port %26gt;
and then computer 1 will plug into the next port inline, and then the other computers into the additonal ports on the router.
5. Then you need to run the Networking Set Up Wizard.
Have a floppy ready to copy set up information (during the set up) to the other computers.
6. REMOTE USERS: For a WAN during set up you want to allow "remote" users.
For your LAN Local Area Network, you want to allow the other computer by name, access.
and
in Control Panel %26gt; Windows Firewall %26gt; tab "Exceptions" designate the members of your Network by each different computer name.
7. You will also need to join each computer to a WORKGROUP in MyNetwork Places. The workgroup name will be the same on both computer.
Next map each of the computers drives, each getting a unique drive letter for access. (NOT A, B, C D or E).
Start backwards with Z or Y or X, other letters
8.You'll need to create a Shared Docs on each computer mapped drive in MyNetwork Neighborhood.
....and for files and folders you want to share, you will click/ hold down r-mouse button/ drag to new folder/ hover over until it turns blue (selected)/drop = let go mouse button /select "copy here" each into Shared Docs in MyNetwork Neighborhood
You will need to do the name of each computer.
You will need access to all of the computers

Reply:It sounds like you have a router with a LAN port IP address in the 188.89.0.0/24 (254 addresses) net range and another router with a LAN port IP address in the 188.89.1.0/24 (254 addresses) range and you want hosts in each network to talk to each other.
The way I would set it up is to use a Cisco router and have the ISP offer a single IP one the WAN interface and then you configure the LAN interface with both networks. LAN interface1 to be 188.89.0.1 and LAN interface2 to be 188.89.1.1. The hosts in 188.89.0.0 net would use 188.89.0.1 as their gateway which would route packed to 188.89.1.0 network. The hosts in 188.89.1.0 network would use 188.89.1.1 as their gateway which routes packets to the 188.89.0.0 network.
If you are using Microsoft Operating Systems, create an Active Directory and put a Domain Controller in each network. Add each additional server and user computer in each network to the domain. This will give resource access to each host in both networks. You could do this with workgroups and adding trusts as well but that is a lot of administration to setup.
I not sure why you would want 508 public addresses for your hosts though.
Its typical that you ask for a single public address from your ISP and use the router's Network Address Translation (NAT) to private addresses to offer some security. I can see where you might want about 10 public addresses because of multiple virtual server access.
Reply:A lot of people reading stuff into this question.
You stick a router between the two networks. How big the router needs to be depends on the speed and volume of traffic that needs to be there.

Operating System on Server for client Computers?
I am in Charge of setting up a server with about 8-10 business stations. So far we are going to get a PowerEdge 840 as a centralized server. the question i have is once i get that up and running...
1. How expensive would going wireless connectivity be, and if not they are all connected using ethernet?
2. We are going to get 20 license keys for Microsoft Small Business Server 2003. That is an operating system, but does that get installed on all work stations, not just the server?
I guess what i am asking is if i am running a workstation connected ot the server, is it neccesary to get the Operating Sy stem Microsoft Small Business Server 2003 on every computer as opposed to continue running on Windows XP
thank you
Brian

How to detect a network loop thats messing up my network!?
hello..
i've recently came up with a prob where my entire network goes nuts and internet connectivity stops for a few seconds like 10 or so..
browsing connectivity/pinging is the same (a bit lagging) but msn/yahoo/skype/mirc/sip goes down and doesnt get back up till after a minute or so..
i have no idea what might be the cause of this even though i suspect a flawed network cable plkugged in somewhere thts forming a broadcast every period of time..
but i dont have any idea of how to detect it or how to know where its originating from!
could any1 help plz! its crucial!

Insufficient information
are you using switches? Is spanning tree setup?
Are they Cisco? if so do you have CDP enabled. That would tell you what switches are connected, then you compare that to your diagram.
How big is your network? tracert may not help if you are a small layer 2 network.
Reply:The most obvious (if it is only your notebook) is to remove that network from your adapter. Beyond this, it is a tough one. Are you using Cisco? Is it only your node effected or is it effecting part of your hybrid network? Netstat could be used to run details about the TCP/IP components and connections on a host. It will provide you a quick way to view traffic statistics without having to run a more complex traffic analysis program such as Ethereal. You can also run traceroute (Tracert). It uses ICMP to trace the path from one network node to another and identifies all the intermediate hops between the two nodes. This is all I can think of other that removing all the crossover and straight Ethernet RJ-45 cables and using a continuity cable tester (what an exhausting job).

Connecting my macbook pro to D-Link DI-714P+ wireless network?
Hi, I have recently boughten a macbook pro and was wondering how I can connect it to the router I have. In the airport menu I find my network and click it, type in the password (WEP) and it say it cannot connect because of a connection timeout. I have been to the D-Link website but cannot find any information that would be useful. I have also tried to log into my router and it hasn't let me log in. Any suggestions?

AP like a repeater?
Change the IP of the dwl-900 to 192.168.1.x Replace x with anything that is currently not in use in your home network. Make sure you disable the DHCP service on the 900 to avoid any conflicts with your existing DHCP server (probably the 780WL). Also, when connecting from the 780 to the 900, use a standard port and not the uplink port on the 900.
Sounds like DSL ISP setup
Hope this helps

Change the IP of the dwl-900 to 192.168.1.x Replace x with anything that is currently not in use in your home network. Make sure you disable the DHCP service on the 900 to avoid any conflicts with your existing DHCP server (probably the 780WL). Also, when connecting from the 780 to the 900, use a standard port and not the uplink port on the 900.
Sounds like DSL ISP setup
Hope this helps

What`s wrong with my network?
Try to ping the computer you are trying to connect to. If you can ping the computer you may have to set up user rights for your network
What`s wrong with my network?
are you addressing by ip number or name? Are you using netbeui? Do you have a DNS or WINS server setup?
Need more info.
Reply:try to reinstall your windows completly (delete everything)
if it麓s not working take another version of windows-this shoud fix the problem

it works fine untill yesterday but now i give a speed test the download is as it shoud be but the upload is only 12 kb\s
I have DSL why my switch connect so hard (2HR)and why my upload speed is 12 kb\s instead of 2Mbit\s?
the isp might be on backup systems due to several factors(upgrading, system failure, line failures etc). try asking them what the problem is.

Verizon dsl to linksys client mode bridge... how??
I have a verizon dsl modem on the first floor and a linksys wrt54g with updated firmware (dd-wrt) that will be set up in client mode on the third floor but despite following the directions I've found in several places, I can't seem to get the linksys to pick up the verizon's signal. It won't pick up... ANY signal.
There was a question on here by a person who had this set up and was asking about boosting the signal. I just wanna know how they finally got that set up to work!
Is there anybody that knows how to do it that could explain it to me thoroughly or easily, or just... directly. If someone could walk me through it, it'd be even better. I've seen the links and the webpages and whatnot, and I just think a walkthrough or clear thorough directions might help me out.
I just don't wanna have to put out a bunch of money for an adapter to get my xbox 360 to work in my room. I'd like to try this way (which costs me zip.)
Any help is much much appreciated!!
Verizon dsl to linksys client mode bridge... how??
When i used to have DSL with AT%26amp;T, they gave me a 2-wire router. I didnt like the setup, since I am a Cisco man! So to get around the 2-wire setup and use a Linksys router (Cisco-same company) I plugged 1 Cat5e from port 1 on the 2-wire router straight to the Linksys Router Port 1. MAKE SURE NOT TO USE THE UPLINK port. That defeats the purpose.
Now the 2-wire router I had did have WIFI-B, and the Linksys-G had wifi G. So I dialed into the 2-wire and turned off the wifi on that router. then dialed into the Linksys and turned on and setup wifi on the Linksys only.
I had no problems with that LAN setup at all...as for DSL..that is a whole different story itself!
If you wish to expand or boost the signal, you need to buy a WAP (wireless Access Point) and set that up on the network also. Just make sure the channelization is set right. If the router and WAP are set on same channel, they will not work as well as you'd like. If you get only 1 WAP, i would set the Router wifi to Ch. 1 or 6 and the WAP to 11.
Good luck

Does a better modem affect your internet speed?
Not really.
If you mean a DIAL UP modem, the best you'll get is likely to be about 44,000 bps on a 56k modem, and that is mainly dependant on line quality
On DSL it's to do with the speed of broadband you paid for.
Does a better modem affect your internet speed?
NO only the package you purchase from you ISP has that ability. a Modem is only a mechanism to transport the broadband signal from the phone line or cable line to your computer.
Does a better modem affect your internet speed?
potentially
Reply:On dial up? No, a better modem probably won't effect it... especially since most are 56k modems.
Plus, the highest anyone can get in USA is around 53.3K. So if that's what your concerned about, be happy. You have the fastest dialup in the nation. :p
Reply:yes it does betwen:
2kb\s-10kb\s(+)
Reply:What you need is one, cable or high speed DSL transmission media and two, a better wireless router. 802.11 specs -- regulated by IEEE have the throughput at different speeds. Efective throughput for 802.11g for example is 20-25 Mbps with a range of up to 330 feet.

Can you make an external hard drive become like a server, only for the shared memory?
Me and another friend work on a website. We were wondering if there was a way that you could hook up an external hard drive to a network to where you could dial-up to that memory storage and enter a username and password. This would act much like a server, but we don't need a whole computer, we just need the memory storage, sort of just adding another drive to both computers and they access the same drive, where she could get on it at her house and I could get on it at mine. How could this work? Is it possible?
Can you make an external hard drive become like a server, only for the shared memory?
i'm not sure if you can make it yourself (although i have heard about people overwriting this product's software with a linux flavor, so i think it is possible to make your own version of this product) but western digital offers a solution that fits your description: http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products....
they come in different harddisk capacities so do look around. hope this helps.
Can you make an external hard drive become like a server, only for the shared memory?
They do make Router's with a hook-up for External Hard Drives. With that setup i dont know if you could specifically dial into the router and only to the HDD, but you could remote desktop into a PC and access that HDD.
Reply:For just the purpose of having a central location for data.. you do not need a server.. just connect to a computer with Internet connection and share the folder. This will take some router configuration i.e. opening ports and allowing access via your WAN access point. You can also use a free web drive.. just google it and you should get several hits. There you can access data via the web and collaborate.

How do i prevent other computers accessing my history?
i have a wireless laptop with my dad's computer plugged in to the modem/ home hub is there any way i could prevent him viewing my internet history without him using my machine?
How do i prevent other computers accessing my history?
Err, Deleting your History is one way.
But having your History "locked down" ... Iam not sure.
How do i prevent other computers accessing my history?
I don't think that a computer can remotely access another computer's internet history. But I could be wrong
Reply:ummm definatly delete history just go to options or tools and delte browsing history
Reply:if u go to tools menu u will find 'clear private data' which may do the trick. its control+shift+delete.
Reply:Delete the browsing history
Reply:it is not possible for his computer to view your internet history if you are not sharing remote access to your windows account.
Reply:unless you give remote access to someone say via msn or sonethings its only possible to access yours via hacking which a good firewall would prevent others from doing and has everyones as said above delete all history but remember to empty recycle bin as it could quite simply be restored ( althought did not read question properly ) sorry
Reply:There is no lock down. If you are on a network (say at work) your companies IT folks are probably using a ghost or keylogger software that can show them every key stroke you type in at work. Don't go there at work is my advice--period.

What is the difference between a domain and website?
check http://www.res-biz.com/ for some articles that explains the difference between a domain and website.
What is the difference between a domain and website?
A domain name can be registered without hosting a website. But all website will have domain names. A hosting space on a server is needed to host the pages for the website.
Reply:A domain is just a registered name. It's your right to have a website. It doesn't mean you have, anything there, to back up the name. It's just your right to have that name, so no one else can use that name. If you have www.herbert.com, then no one else, anywhere, in the entire world, can create a website with the NAME www.herbert.com (even though you haven't created a website yet).
It's like, having the name for a child, before you give birth to the child. But, if someone types www.herbert.com into the browser command line, they'll get something like, "This site under construction..."
A website is the name plus the host. The host is the stored files (at least one), to which people (well, other computers) have access.
You could have a host without a domain name, but, that would be like, having a "bastard child."
Reply:A domain name is usually associated with a company or other type of organization--registeder with ICANN %26amp; IANA. Usually IT folks refer to a machines host name plus its domain name or its fully qualified host name. Example, if you worked at Bells and gave your workstation the name John your fully qualified host name might be "John.bells.com."
A web site contains an IP address, host name and has an alias or nickname linked to it. (IE type espn.go in the address bar and watch what happens). It takes you to Google web sites containing ESPN. A web site also contains a suffix linking it to a specific domain such as com for commercial net for network providers or Edu for Educational. So as an example, a web site for a school might be: www.trinitycollege.edu
Reply:If you want to start your website I recommend purchase your domain and hosting together. In this way it is possible to get your domain for free. Some hosting services offer this gift today.

Can we recover my brother's stolen HP pentium II laptop that was stolen a few days ago.?
The laptop was stolen in Sokoto Nigeria. it was not registered with HP. We know who ever steal or bought it from the thief must connect it to the net even though not in the same city. Is there a way that it can be traced via the IP address of where it will be connected.
Can we recover my brother's stolen HP pentium II laptop that was stolen a few days ago.?
Pentium II laptop? That thing is worth 2 dollars. Go out side and find a couple pop cans and recycle them and you'll earn your money back.
Can we recover my brother's stolen HP pentium II laptop that was stolen a few days ago.?
Unless you have a software solution (Lojack for computers) you can not track it based on the IP address, since that is assigned by the router it is connected too.
Best bet is to see if you can physically find the computer. Although it is an old computer.. I do not know the worth of the data that was on it. Might just need to get another one.
Reply:Agreed, its an old computer, but i can understand that its YOUR computer and you'd like it back.
You're only chance is if you have the MAC address (hardware address) of the network cards in the machine. If you have those, you can submit them to all the ISPs in your area, and they might contact authorities if the computer ever is connected to their network. Although the ISP has to work with you, and it wont work with a router in between.

Reply:this all depends...
If you live in an apartment building, DSL may not be the way to go. With DSL, the internet is relied on the phone line (copper) in the building. And if something goes wrong and they come out, you will be charged. I got charged 150 bucks once when the phone line had static and wasnt even in my unit!! And with DSL comes Satellite...if you live somewhere it can rain or be windy (like Earth) you will have troubles with that too. It is cheaper, but Broadband with Comcast i have had 0 problems, and I love the speed. The price is worth it and no ugly satellite!!
And Comcast does have intro packages, but overall you may spend like 45/mo on internet and 60-80 on TV package.
But i dont rely on the phone line of the building i am in, nor does my tv go out in wind, rain, etc!!

If I install verizon DSL wireless router are there any conflicts I should be aware of with windows XP on a HP.
I had problems with conflicts in the past with verizon software. I have a 2004 HP with a 20g HD, and a 937mghz CPU and 256K of ram memory. I want to install the verizon wireless router and the software but would like to know if there will be any conflicts that I don't know about. Appreciate anyone's previous experience with verizon and\or experience with HP computers. I already have video gliches, slowness on the internet due to dial up. Any input would be greatly apprciated.
What would happen if a User computer has the same 'Comptuer Name' as the Server on a network ??
Ya, so today I was going to log into a computer across the city, and I asked the user to check their Computer Name via the My Comptuer properties..........
When she told me I was thinking "WtF ?" Turns out the comptuer name was the same as the name of one of our servers. This computer was just returned from some crappy PC repair shop and we think they might have changed it or something, but nothing catastropic has happened yet....i just told her to disconnect it.
I know bad things happen when 2 comp's have the same name.....but what about a server and a comp ? im sure its not good..
What would happen if a User computer has the same 'Comptuer Name' as the Server on a network ??
Just means you're going to have some DNS issues.
Chances are, there are static DNS entries already in place for the servers.
If you're not IT, call IT.
If you are IT, just have to change the name of the computer. The computer is obviously not part of a domain, because theres no way they both could be members. Then just delete the DNS record that her computer had with the bad name.
What would happen if a User computer has the same 'Comptuer Name' as the Server on a network ??
Same computer name is not a big deal. It cannot have the same IP address or you will have an address conflict.
Reply:its joust normal the omportant thing is the IP address and thay cant be the same in the network

Best server configuration?
I was wondering if you had a search engine that had yahoo's capabilities but with only about 450,000 registered users, and about 1,500,000 visitors a month, what would be the best server configuration, as far as GHz is concerned as well as the amount of cores.
Best server configuration?
Depends on how much money you have to throw at it and how many nodes you need to connect. A star or hyrbid star network is typical. If it's a WAN and you have the money, a mesh or particl mesh network provides good fault tolerance. You will need a good DNS and Web server as well. Over a million visitors is a LOT of visitors so you want some serious server RAM for performance. I would also invest in a good data back-up system. Data is a companies life blood.

Ok.....................?
You will have to bare with me I am not very technical. Can you see internet browsing history from the wireless laptop on the main computer or from the wireless router ?
Thankyou.

Reply:no you cant because browser history is stored on the computers hard drive. the only way you could do it would be to find your browse history folder in your main computer and send it to your laptop.
Reply:Neither, the only browsing history captured will be on the laptop, not another computer or the router. Your router can log the ip addresses of the web sites visited by each client on the network, but that is all numerical data, not URLs.
Reply:There is a small chance it is possible if the main computer user is a pro ; D
You have to remember, even if the browsing history is not viewable, the tempory internet which includes EVERYTHING you have looked at, will still be there!
If you want to clean your computer of all viewing history etc
Download
www.ccleaner.com/download
This will clean out history and tempory intnernet in one scan making everything you do untracable! Also speeds up your computer ; )
Hope that helps!

Please help with my internet?
My internet doesn't seem to work properly because whenever I try to go to some websites such as YouTube, Hotmail, GOOGLE, Dailymotion, Megavideo, etc. it takes a long time to load and then something pops up saying " Network Timeout" (im using a wireless router, wireless connection and Firefox 3).
Please help with my internet?
firefox 3 is a release candidate 2 currently. Did it start happening when you started using the beta firefox? If so, you need to report it as a bug first, then go back to stable version.
If that is not the case and it happened before, I would do a little deduction to rule out trouble. Try plugging in your computer and bypassing the wireless, if you can get to those websites better then, you know it is a wireless prob. If the same thing happens you need to look at what is going on with your local machine. Virus....programs running in the background....etc...

I-cable broadband modem doesn't work with the laptop?
i have an i-cable connection with my desktop (windows xp home basic) which works perfectly. however i just bought a new dell xps 1530 and i tried to connect my i-cable internet wire to the dell laptop (vista home basic) and when i tried setting up a broadband interenet accesss (PPOE) it asks for a username and password, but i-cable does not have a username and password and i left both field blank and as a result it couldn't connect. on the other hand my other interenet connection which is netvigator (PCCW) has a username and password and it worked perfectly [in both cases i plugged the interenet cable] any suggestions guys?? thanks alot

How do I set up a network so that the computer I'm on would combine its usage with the other for better prefor
An example:
I could network 2 or computers both with dual cores for a quad core experience. Other components can work together too, such as, the motherboads and their chipsets, the GPUs, and memory. The Computers might even be a Mac and the others be PCs
How do I set up a network so that the computer I'm on would combine its usage with the other for better prefor
What you're looking for is 'clustering' or 'distributed computing'.
You're going to have to be running specific apps written for distributed computing though (which arent that many).
Go to apple's site and look for "xgrid". they actually can do this right out of the box.
Although its possible in some instances, its not like you can just chain together a bunch of computers and just run regular apps faster. They have to be very specific.
The program visualhub on the mac is a good example of a program that takes advantage of this. you can use all the networked macs around to help you convert videos.
How do I set up a network so that the computer I'm on would combine its usage with the other for better prefor
No network connection can make your computers pool their CPU resources. You need a cluster operating system, like Beowulf.
Reply:While this is possible I don't think it'll do what you hope it will.
You cannot hook 4 pentium 2s together and use them to play Portal.
What can be done is distributed processing, a process commonly used for such applications as molecular simulation, weather forecasting and computer gnerated imagery (movie effects).
The details of such techniques are rather excessive, so I'd suggest you do a search for "Beowulf cluster" for a decent introduction to the concepts.
Reply:The answer to this question depends on the sort of "Better Performance" or "multi-core experience" your are hoping to achieve. Sadly, for the sort of applications that most people have experience with, networking multiple computers together will NOT improve the perceived performance or provide a "better experience" than you already get on your best performing machine.
BUT... If you are interested learning about how networks of computers can solve some classes of very hard problems as well or better than all but a few of the very fastest computers on the planet then you are in luck.
Just a few day ago a new performance record was set. The new fastest machine on the planet can perform 1000 trillion Flops (Floating Point Operations) per second. The last time I remember a new record been set it was not by a huge IBM supercomputer but a volunteer nework of Playstation3 owners who ran some special software and left their PS3s on and connected to the Internet (when they weren't Playing :) ).
So here is my answer. Unless you are interested in getting involved in the exciting world of volunteer grid computing, forget about trying to get better "performance" by networking a few computers together.
BTW: that new PetaFlop IBM machine is reported to have over 12,000 cell processors very similar to the those in the PS3.
Note that I wrote this all off the top of my head without rechecking sources. I've added some links to the "Know You're source" area. Check those out.

Update: I'm glad others have mentioned Beowolf clustering. That can be particularly fun if you can get a big bunch of machines reasonably close together for awhile either by getting a bunch of friends interested in a clustering party and/or getting permission to use a big computer lab over a long holiday weekend. You can get a real taste of _power_ that way. But you need need to find something to do with it.
Contributing to Virtual Supercomputer grids on the Internet is a different sort of experience. The projects are pretty well defined. Just pick one that interests you and join. The Wikipedia article below says "Folding@Home - 1,949 teraflops, as of June 10, 2008" is still way ahead of the fastest real Supercomputer. Protein Folding is a pretty important problem to solve. The new IBM machine is sort of like a cluster on fiberoptic steroids. It's "problem" will be simulating nuclear weapons.

Ethernet Splitter?
My fiance and I just got Road Runner and he wants to play video games online from his PS2 while I'm on the internet. We need a Ethernet splitter so that we can both be online. Do they make those? Where can we find one? Do we just connect it to the modem then run two Ethernet cables from that..one to the back of the PC and one to the back of the PS2?
Ethernet Splitter?
no. you need a router
Ethernet Splitter?
It's called a router. You can get them at any electronics store.
Reply:There isn't a "ethernet splitter" like there would with the phone line.
There is what is called a "router" (pronounced rowt-er) that allows one ethernet cable to go in and, most commonly, 4 to come out. Linksys, Netgear, Belkin, Cisco, and others make wired and wireless routers. They range in price from $40 to $200.
Reply:Network connections are rather more complex than cable TV I'm afraid.
The device you need is called a router, and while not critically expensive they're not cheap either.
Exactly how to configure the router for your needs depends on your ISP and the model of router you get, but what you want to do is the most common need, so it should be easy enough to do a google search for your ISP name and router model number.
Reply:There is no such thing as a ethernet splitter. What you need is a router. They can probably find one at a local Buest Buy, Radio Shack, or some place that sells electronics for $40 and above. When you get it connect it into your modem. You will need to purchase and additional ethernet cable. Hook the copmuter's ethernet cable into one of the ports on the router and the PS2's cable into another. See the instructions that come with the router for more details.
Reply:Yes, they do make these. You are looking for something called a "router."
The most common routers are made by Linksys and Netgear, and can be found from many local and online retailers. I will include a link to Newegg.com - a very reputable online dealer - to show you a suggested model.
Routers can come in a few types - some have wireless abilities, others are wired only. Almost all routers today give you a few extra ports to plug into, where older routers used to require a separate "ethernet switch" to provide you with more ports. Routers not only give you extra physical ports to plug your cables into, but they also perform network address translation (NAT) on the network signals (TCP/IP) themselves, giving you more IP addresses for use within your home network.
When you purchase this item, or something like it, plug the cable from your cable modem into the router, and then plug your computers into the router. If you follow the setup instructions properly, you will have successfully split your internet connection to more than one device/computer!
Also, beware of cable splitters. While handy for making one cable run handle two devices, they must be used in pairs (i.e. you put a splitter at each end. At the device end you plug in two computers, and at the other end you plug two cables from the splitter into two ports on your router or switch). As such, they do nothing to get two network ports out of your cable modem without a router.
Reply:Buy a router
Reply:Yes... THEY DO make these.

I would spend a few extra and get a router.
