Does a better modem affect your internet speed?

Not really.

If you mean a DIAL UP modem, the best you'll get is likely to be about 44,000 bps on a 56k modem, and that is mainly dependant on line quality

On DSL it's to do with the speed of broadband you paid for.
Does a better modem affect your internet speed?
NO only the package you purchase from you ISP has that ability. a Modem is only a mechanism to transport the broadband signal from the phone line or cable line to your computer.
Does a better modem affect your internet speed?
potentially
Reply:On dial up? No, a better modem probably won't effect it... especially since most are 56k modems.

Plus, the highest anyone can get in USA is around 53.3K. So if that's what your concerned about, be happy. You have the fastest dialup in the nation. :p

Reply:What you need is one, cable or high speed DSL transmission media and two, a better wireless router. 802.11 specs -- regulated by IEEE have the throughput at different speeds. Efective throughput for 802.11g for example is 20-25 Mbps with a range of up to 330 feet.
